A
Brief History of the Paper Clip
The humble paper clip is a wonder of simplicity and function. First invented
in1867, it was originally intended to attach price tags to fabrics. But
it wasn't long before people realized the clips could also be used to bind papers.
By the late 1890's the common bent-wire paper clip found wide-spread use in offices
and homes. Before paper clips, straight
pins, string and other materials were used as fasteners, but they punctured or
damaged the papers. The paper clips' success had to await the invention of steel
wire in the second half of the nineteenth century, which was elastic enough to
be bent, stretched, and twisted into a double-U shape. With rounded end
loops, they did not catch, scratch or tear the papers.
